Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Vilnius to the picturesque town of Trakai, a place where time seems to have stood still. Surrounded by over 200 lakes, this area was once the strategic and spiritual center of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. As we approach the shores of Lake Galvė, the iconic red-brick towers of the Island Castle will emerge from the mist, offering a view that has inspired poets and kings for centuries.
We will cross the long wooden bridges to enter the massive gates of the Trakai Island Castle. This isn’t just a museum visit; it’s a step back into the 14th century. Together with your guide, you will explore: The Grand Duchy’s Treasury, The Ducal Palace, The Defensive Walls, Museum Collections.
Leaving the fortress behind, we delve into the unique “Wooden City” of Trakai. Unlike any other town in Lithuania, Trakai is home to the Karaite community—a Turkic-speaking group brought from Crimea over 600 years ago to serve as the Grand Duke’s personal bodyguards. As we walk past their famous three-windowed wooden houses, you will learn about their preserved traditions, the Turkic language they still speak, and their religious heritage. This cultural segment is a rare look into a living history that most tourists miss.
No visit to Trakai is complete without a culinary stop. You will have the opportunity to try the authentic Kybyn—a traditional pastry filled with meat or vegetables, which has become a symbol of Trakai’s hospitality. Finally, we will take a moment to enjoy the tranquility of the lakeshore. Whether it’s a quiet walk along the Yacht Club or simply watching the sailboats glide past the castle walls, the serene energy of Trakai will provide a perfect contrast to the heavy history of the morning. You will return to Vilnius with a deep understanding of Lithuania’s royal past and its diverse cultural identity.
